Venice by morning's first light

Hello everyone. I hope that this week's treating you well. I'm sun-kissed and feeling energised after returning from a mid-week location shoot on a beautiful wine farm in Somerset West. Since I'm feeling kind of chirpy, I thought I'd begin sharing with you today a little more about my trip to Italy.

Although I'm jumping ahead on the timescale - let's start with our weekend visit to Venice. To be honest, I have mixed feelings for this historical beauty on the water since Venice is VERY busy by day and is sadly somewhat of a tourist trap. Therefore the only way to experience her true charm I feel, is to wake up early and explore her many secrets at sunrise. Which is exactly what we did. The soft muted colours, the deserted streets and empty squares, the contrast of architecture reflected in glassy water, made Venice by morning's first light one of Italy's most enchanting cities... but you had better enjoy the magic while it lasts, for soon her endless labyrinth of streets and canals will be bustling with the touristy masses once more.

  3. Exceptional, glorious images, Janine! Photographing a place that has been photographed so much is a challenge but you have created exquisite, timeless scenes that exude the essential atmosphere of La Serenissima.

I know exactly what you mean about the mixed emotions. Venice is such a place of contrasts, achingly beautiful and cursed by that beauty with thundering hordes of people.

I visited Venice in the middle of a cold March night. Carnivale was over, the city felt deserted. We arrived at about 1:30 am and walked for hours through the piazzas and calle. devoid of even the famed pigeons. Stepping into Piazza San Marco and being the only two people in it was a heart pounding moment I will never forget.

I'll share your photos with David. He mentioned a few days ago that we might just hop on a plane to Venice next month, just because...

Thank you for your fabulous work and look forward to more. hugs to you – g

  4. amazingly lovely! agree w/what Georgianna said re your images... (I'm lazy I know). I was there once years ago, and still remember seeing the sunrise as our overnight train pulled into Venice. Was supposed to go to Venice late this month, but not meant to be (boohoo, though nothing dramatic, just scheduling). Still dreaming about Venice during Carnavale one of these days. In the meantime, will enjoy armchair traveling. Have a wonderful rest of the wk! L

  5. You captured it beautifully Janine! I visited Venice off season, so I didn't have to contend with loads of tourists and found it amazing!

  6. So many exceptional memories of this truly special place - THANK YOU all for sharing them here! I was totally transported to that cold March morning with Georgianna though, and am so jealous that her husband will be 'hopping' on a plane to visit there again soon:) Hope you all have a speedy Friday to get you swiftly into the weekend, xo
